Where is By the Water Foundation based? We are officially based in Illinois, USA, with our first location launched in Miramar, Ecuador. As of 2025, we operate learning hubs in Chicago, Tonsupa, and Macas.
-
What does By the Water Foundation do?We create safe and tech-equipped learning spaces for children from low-income families. Our volunteer tutors teach subjects like English, nutrition, dance, beauty, and music theory through both in-person classes and weekly online sessions.
-
How can I become a tutor?Anyone aged 18 or older can apply to be a tutor. You don’t need to dedicate a physical workspace, but you do need a stable internet connection to stream classes through Zoom or TikTok. After three months of consistent teaching, we provide a Certificate of Dedication as recognition of your efforts.
-
What are “sponsored items”?Sponsored items are the laptops, projectors, speakers, and other learning tools that make our programs possible. We accept donations of approved items in workable condition. As of 2025, we offer free shipping on any item from our approved list, which you can find on our website.
-
How are the sponsored items used? All sponsored items go directly to our onsite learning hubs or online tutoring network, giving children access to reliable technology for their studies.
-
Do I need teaching experience to volunteer? No prior experience is required. We’ll provide you with guidelines and support to help you lead classes confidently.
-
Can I host classes at my own home? While it’s not required, some volunteers choose to host in-person sessions. Our priority is ensuring you have good internet for streaming and a safe, quiet environment for the students.
-
How do I support the foundation if I can’t teach? You can support us by donating approved items, sponsoring a student, or contributing to our efforts to secure dedicated learning spaces for our hubs.
-
What is an Onsite Location? An onsite location is one of our community-based learning hubs/spaces where children can come together to access tutoring, technology, and a safe environment for learning. Each location is equipped with a laptop, projector, and speaker provided by By the Water Foundation, and staffed by our dedicated volunteer teachers. These hubs allow us to hold in-person classes, build community connections, and give students a consistent place to learn and grow.
